I Won’t

The following is a humanist, anti-predestination, country love song. I wrote it because I like country, in general. I don’t follow any specific artists. But I like country as a genre. I like the twang of the guitar and the earnestness of the vocal style. I like the usual country themes of rueful sadness, the innate hardship of life, and finding joy in simple things. ┬áSo I decided to see what would come out if I applied that style to a simple idea that I’ve never heard discussed in a country song: that there’s no such thing as fate or soulmates.

I can smell
Yer mornin’ coffee
Lead me to ya
If I were blind
The bitter taste
The wakin’ rush
Ain’t hard to find

Oh when the sun
Hits yer hair
I don’t hear angels
Singin’ in the air
When people say we’re
One hell of a pair
I don’t mind it none
I swear

Now I can’t speak fer Destiny
I can’t speak fer Time
And I know the words you wanna hear
When I got yer hand in mine
But I cannot tell a lie, my dear
It’d be easy, but I don’t:
I know I can live without you
But I won’t

I can put my arms around another girl
I ain’t no great catch
But I know how to make em dance and twirl
With pearly whites, and shinin’ eyes
The deepest shade of blue
But every single thing they do
Just reminds me of you

No, I can’t speak fer Destiny
I can’t speak fer Time
And I know the words you wanna hear
When I got yer hand in mine
But I cannot tell a lie, my dear
It’d be easy, but I don’t:
I know I can live without you
But I won’t

(musical break)

You understand?
I’m yer man
You make me yours everyday
You choose to stick around
Everyday we stay sweet and clever
In your arms
I’ll be found

Cause I can’t speak fer Destiny
No! I can’t speak fer Time
Yes, I know the words you wanna hear
When I got yer hand in mine
Rest of the world may see fit
to lie to you, but I don’t:
I know I can live without you
But I won’t

I
Can
Live
With
Out
You
But
I
Won’t
